  • Sir Lowry’s Downhill MTB -

On  Sunday I went through to go and check out the new series that Chris Nixon has been getting running around here in the Western Cape. It was my first time at the Sir Lowry’s trail… so sick! Was super amped to go ride it asap! Besides getting destroyed by the heat and no water, I managed to snap a few shots. Hope you enjoy them!

  • Session for Session -

So it's been a while since something was last posted, mainly cause I lost 2 rad sessions with a hard drive crash :-( As well as being snowed under with other work!

But anyways, enough excuses... here is a session I shot with Jean-marc a while back at the Planetarium as well as another day at some Town spots. Was pretty sick day all in all, with LANK tricks going down!
    Sick.

First up after waiting quite a while for this to be landed and about 400 shots later, the Double Backside Flip off this rad ledge was finally landed by JM himself! Really sick!

Frontside Flip. I loved the way this shot was naturally framed with the old school pillars.

Besides the fact that this shot is SUPER funny and makes me laugh everytime, its a pretty cool shot! There were these wierd, Art vibes in the Gardens, so anyways, we were trying to get a shot for an article we were gunning for with Session Mag, so decided to get the portrait shots in one of these art vibes.

A pretty sick Backside Tailslide in town.

Nollie-Melon grab off ledge in town.

Luc with a massive Ollie over the handrail! Luc was one of the first skaters I actually shot, and to see how much he's improved has been epic to see! Gotta love this kids style. Fast and hard!

Sick Front-Blunt on a makeshift bench.

Ebi... charging it. First one to nail this puppy this session.

To end off the session JM nailed a rad, smooth Nollie Heel 5-0. However keep your eyes on the next issue of Session Mag to see it ;-)

  • Jean-Marc and Ray skate trip -

Yesterday I drove out to Stellenbosch with Ray and Jean-Marc, 2 ripper skaters in my opinion.
We started out skating at The Shed, which was set up by my good buddy Chris van der Merwe. The park is rocking out with new stuff always being built.
Managed to snap a couple shots, but not loads as parks are super uncreative in my opinion.
Also had some of my new camera settings messed up, but sorted them towards the end. Bruce's tip for the day to other photographers - Always watch your flash sync speed!

We then cruised home and finally got to stop off at a secret spot I've been meaning to check out for a long time now!
We didnt have stacks of time, so we couldn't shoot stacks, but Jean-Marc still managed to nail a couple tricks and Ray owned the heavenly 'manual pads'!

Setting up a shot to try get some sponsors smiling! Front side flip over Ray. Sick! Got my settings perfect, too stoked.

Switch backside 180 down a sick drop!

    Ray nose-manualing the entire thing.

    Arty angle of same drop.

  • Sebastian Kessler MTB photographer -

Found this guy on Flickr and he rips!

Such a good style and bringing in the natural elements and then also having his subjects so well lit.
Near perfect composition every shot. His shots of surfboard shapers are also real good. Give him a look here: Wangapoa.com

  • Brian Garson -

Brian Garson is a man I have been following for quite some time now. The main reasons I like him is not only cause he uses Nikon, hehe, but also cause he knows how to use external flashes REALLY well! His lighting techniques make me look at his images for so long! They're rad! Check some out...

  • The beginning of The End of it All -

I went out for my first ever band promo shoot today. It was for my buddies rad punk band called The End of it All.

I was overall pretty stoked with the shots and so were they! Used 1 flash with a radio trigger.

This is a good example of showing how your favourite image as the photographer only comes out after about the 30th time looking through the photos!

Goes to show... trying to look hardcore just doesn't work! Love slipping these in, as it really is what most of my shoots are like!

  • Orange River Adventure -

Over the Easter weekend, I went on a rad trip up to the Orange River with my lovely girlfriend and 3 other friends! It was super fun!
I've always wanted to do the Orange River as its seems to be one of those gems that SA has. I didn't know what to expect as everyone has different opinions. All I did know was that it wasn't as hardcore as the Zambezi... which bummed me out a bit! Cause all I want is "fast and hard!"
We went through Felix Unite and they did probably the most impressive organizing I've ever seen! Best food ever, best guides ever, and best camping ever! So Sick!
We slept at the launch site the first morning, then charged down the river sleeping on its banks over the following 3/4 days, I can't remember!
We didn't see a leopard, but I freaking found 5 Easter eggs! Deal!
Here are a couple pics which I managed to snap from my water-proofed-very-happy-he-stayed-dry camera.

    Crossing the border into Namibia.

    It was HOT!

Pretty cool arid Moroccan style landscape.

    Reach for the skyyyyy!

  • Heaving Hoek -

Went on a photoshoot today with good ol' Heavy Dave. Got to Hoek to find it about 3-6ft and heaving with a funny wind. Good thing Jared Housten and Josh Kleve were there to add a but more flair to the line-up, which consisted of... no one else! haha.
Got one cracker shot which I was stoked with. Other than that, pretty much froze and got lank upset with the stupid mist and wind!

I made this B&W as I thought it captured the storminess on the day. He didn't actually pull straight, he pulled into a sick gaping closeout! Stoked!

A nice old school look. Something you don't see in your average surf mag. Josh Kleve.

And to end off the cracker that Mr Invisible rode and got spat out across the bay!

  • Tokai Mountain Bike Shoot -

Went today to take some photos of my buddies brother Rolf up in Tokai Forest.
Been yearning to take my 2 slave flashes out to the woods and shoot some shots!

    Rolf charges... full stop!

MTB photography is pretty tough as I learnt, as it's not like skate photography where a guy attempts a trick a couple times in the same part of the ramp or something. For MTB photography however, it's super hard, cause you only really shoot the big gaps and jumps! Which means you get maximum 2 tries per shot mainly. Also your subject moves so freaking fast, its pretty tough to track.
But soon I will have a Nikon D200 with a faster frame-per-second rate, so that'll be rad!

If anyone else wants some shots done, them give me a shout! More than amped to shoot some more!

Nice and arty, they way I like it!

C.H.A.R.G.E! This is way bigger than it looks!

  • Pro X chargers -

What a day! The Pro-X Games at the Waterfront.

Some of the best action I've ever witnessed. To be honest I thought the event would be lame and I grumbled about going! Eventually made my way there and jeepers. First sight on arrival was a Moto X charger dominating a backflip as his first trick for warm-up! So stoked, whipped out the camera and shot off a good couple of gigs worth of photos throughout the day!

There were Dirt jumps for BMX and mountain bike, as well as huge ones for the Moto X, wakeboarding in the canal, sick mini ramp for skating, and a killer stage for bands! It was mainly a momentous day for me as I realised that extreme sports photography is really where I know Gods called me. I have such a sick time and never get bored when shooting these guys! The wipeouts, the victory in landing a monster jump, the adrenaline, the personalities of the athletes, the dirtiness and the fun!

I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous! Soooo high! Couldn't believe these guys.

    Chargers brigade.

You are my hero, whoever you are.

One of my favourite shots of the whole day. I just couldn't believe he even contemplated this sort of move! Got in there with the angle as well! Stoked.

Loved the mist rolling in the background.

More of a social documentary styled image of the day.

George van Blerk killing it on the mini-ramp.

    Again...

    Different angle.. Works for me.

If I could choose any photo to print in a mag, this may be one of them. Gave it an old school look and LOVE how the groms are all just looking up at this guy, who is literally out of frame (on purpose).

This was the jam session. There were literally 4 deathmen in the air at a time, all doing the hugest moves!

    Sick!

    The BMX'ers were owning it.

Love this image. Really summed up the day for me.

Owning it, wish I could remember all these guys names so I could credit them.

Another one of my favourites from the day.

This guy just smiles/laughs on every jump, I think I know why, but I just think it's also cause he's stoked!

    Charging the final jump.

    Ditto

This dude fell like 8 times attempting and never gave up! Biggest move ever! It's guys like this that make me shoot! Thank you for inspiring me charger BMX dude!
